Black People in Poland: A Self-Reflective Study of Discourse

Dr. Margaret Ohia-Nowak will give a lecture on representations of black people in Poland:
“Black People in Poland: A Self-Reflective Study of Discourse”

This lecture will focus on a wide range of discursive representations of black people in the Polish language and media discourse. It will apply a critical applied research methodology, which requires researchers to be a part of the discourse they study and, moreover, represent a social group that experiences discursive oppression. Hence, an in-depth self-reflection will be involved in the analysis of linguistic practices.

Dr. Margaret Ohia-Nowak is a linguist and a critical media analyst. In 2015 she received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Wroclaw for her doctoral dissertation “Manifestations of Racism in the Polish Language. The Mechanisms of Language System, Text and Discourse”. Currently she is an Independent Fellow affiliated with the Wroclaw University of Technology and the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research SIETAR.
